“I have read in some websites and also books that there are some sewing manufacturers that provide sewing and production services for handbag designers. My question is if I learn to professionally design a different handbags, can I pay to this manufacturers to sew and produce my designs for me?
If the answer is yes, so why people try to establish a studio for themselves and buy different machines and tools which costs lots of their time and money?”
Very good questions! All manufactures will make and do your first or second samples. The answer is the cost! The pattern alone would cost you $750 to $1,000+ per pattern, depending on how complex, so if you have 6 styles you are down $6000. Each bag produced will be based on volume, example, you need 6 bags in 6 styles for a total of 36 bags each bag would cost you anywhere from fabric $175.00 = $6,300 for 36 bags to $500.00 per bag in leather equals $18,000!
Why? There are a number of reason, first you have no following, so you have no sales, you have no volume. Every piece of your pattern has to be made into a die for production. The average cost per die in my day ran from $60.00+ depending on the size of the die. Even if laser cut and most small production facilities don’t have use laser cutters, it cost time to scan and cut.
At a minimum let’s say for a tote with pocket and flap You have 1 die for the front and bag 1 for the flap of your pocket, 1 for the pocket, 1 for the lining and any pockets inside. Now you are at $240.00 just to setup for a simple tote. Time, labor, overhead electricity, the rent, everything goes into that $175.00. Plus the cost of sourcing your materials, hardware anything you need to make your bag different and your design. You can supply all that if you like, but how much is the cost for 36 bags. Those are just a few of the things.
Here is the biggie! Can you, with no brand enter the market at $300.00 retail if you sale yourself, that means you have to have a website. and do your own marketing, if stores at $400.00+ retail? Then ask yourself what store will give you shelf space at those price points?
Finally do you have $15 or $20,000 to get started? The reason people buy the machines and learn is they can make what they sale, until they get to point where they have the confidence or volume to risk $20,000. That’s the real reason in a nutshell, it’s about the minimums and cost.
